Before you embark on a journey of
revenge, dig two graves - Confucius I
decided to create this sticker after reading a column in my local
newspaper by a local humor writer. The writer, Tom Carpenter, sometimes
devotes his entire column to pithy quotes. One Sunday not long ago, his
collection of quotes included this zinger by Confucius. I
don't know what Confucius was thinking of, but I thought immediately of
Iraq. Confucius might just as easily have said, "Before you embark
on a journey of revenge, make sure you know who did the dirty
deed." But somehow that does not sound like something Confucius
would say. Anyway, I like to
think that I am in the same business as Confucius -- thinking up little
bits of wisdom for the ages. Perhaps 2500 years from now flying saucers
will be zipping around the universe with bumper stickers on them saying
things like, "Love Your Neighbor Pre-emptively." And maybe the
stickers will attribute such sage advice to "Dan." No last
name will be required. Everyone will know who I was -- I was the 21st
